| | | | | Great Zimbabwe
Meaning "sacred house" in Bantu, it is the largest ancient stone construction south of the Sahara, covering nearly 1,800 acres composed of three distinct sets of ruins known as the Hill Complex, the Valley Complex, and the Great Enclosure.
Built between the 12th and 15th centuries by the ancestors of the Shona, one of Zimbabwe's many Bantu-speaking groups, Great Zimbabwe is made of dry masonry with stones shaped and fitted together with no mortar, but marvelously accurate, resembling the skill of the Inca builders of Peru.
It is believed that at some point the stone complex may have had as many as 18,000 inhabitants.
Some of Great Zimbabwe's walls are over five meters (16.4 feet) high and were constructed without mortar. Eventually the city was abandoned and fell into ruin.
White colonial settlers at one time linked Great Zimbabwe to the source of King Solomon's gold, the fabled city of Ophir.
